Boat Building

Boat building used to be the way of life in Bequia and there is still evidence that many of the local men still have the knack and still work on their boats along the waters. There are also craftsmen displaying their hand carved boats that are sold in the shops in the center of town and on the weekend, especially Saturday near the market, many men have their crafts on sale. They are a work of art and so beautiful one has to purchase a boat and take it home with them. I have one of these boats and I love to look at it every day as it reminds me of our Windward Islands vacation in Bequia.

Step out of your Caribbean yacht charter and get into your dinghy and head for downtown Port Elizabeth. Tie up at the dinghy dock and walk towards the left into town. There you can pick up a taxi to tour the island of Bequia. Bequia is so fascinating and full of history and the taxi driver's are full of knowledge and will take up one end of the island to the other. It is the best way to see all that Bequia has to offer. Stop along side of the road and get a bite to eat or stop for dinner. Your driver will know exactly where to take you!

Moonhole

While anchored in Admiralty Bay, one can walk along Tony Gibbons Beach, aka Princess Margaret's Beach and at the farthest corner you may see these open air, huge stone like structures that everyone refers to as "Moonhole" Jim and Sheena Johnson offer tours for $40 EC to tour the houses that are vacant and they literally grow out of the rocks located on the cliff above. You cannot not sail or climb up the mountainous hillside and it is best to take a taxi to Moonhole. Make sure that you call a day ahead and make reservations to make sure that either Jim or Sheena are there. Or if feeling very adventurous after seeing the fantastic view, one may even rent the house by the week for your next Caribbean vacation.

Bequia Scuba Diving

Dive Bequia which you can call at VHF: 16 will take you diving with their scuba instructors. I have just been informed that a new hotel on Union Island has opened up and it is beautiful with all modern amenities. It is located in beautiful Clifton Harbour. It has 17 rooms with a fresh water swimming pool, restaurant, and dive shop on site. While I haven't seen this property, it comes highly recommended. I am headed back to the Windward Islands in two weeks and my trip is already planned. I will definitely stop at Union Island on my next trip in February 2009 and during my caribbean yacht charter I will be visiting King's Landing Hotel and will report back to you at this time. Walking Tour

A walking tour of Mustique is one way to see the beautiful private island or one can hire a taxi to see the sights. Make sure that you explore Britannia Bay and also go around the island as parts are developed and some are not. A taxi can show you the aerial view of Macaroni Bay and also all of the beautiful white sandy beaches that encompass Mustique. Make sure that you include a stop to the island of Mustique while planning your Caribbean vacation. While it is small, it is just so beautiful you won't want to miss it!

The place to see and be and eat is Basil's! Everyone has heard of Basil's Bar and restaurant, the most famous beach bar, especially for his two week blues festival! What a party! We also have dined on his famous seafood and lobster bake. The lobster is one of the finest served in all of the Windward Islands. One of our sailing buddies, Kathi, will only ever order lobster from Basil's. She has yet to try anything new! As far as Kathi is concerned, Basil's is the place to start and end her Caribbean sailing vacations!

Mustique Villas

A great place to stay is in the Mustique Villas. You can start your Caribbean sailing vacation here on Mustique, as you can rent a villa for a few days, explore the island and then hire a captain and do a few days sailing the waters of Caribbean! The Windward Islands are so flexible that one is able to sail, sun, boat, explore with a local in a taxi or do whatever you want to do as the sky is the limit. XCAPE is located on the second floor on top of an old building and you really have to look for it during the day, but can be easily found at night! Especially Friday night when they have live music it is very crowded! This is another one of our favorites! Our TMM team first recommended this to us and we always try to stop either sailing south or when we are returning North!

Young's Island

Once you have anchored your sailing yacht charter, drop your dinghy and start exploring. Young's Island has many restaurants and bars. We try to have a cocktail at one place and eat at another. Bring a flashlight as it gets very dark later in the evening and having the light one can maneuver around all of the other anchored boats with ease. On our last trip we had lunch at CAPE Restaurant and dinner at Lime Restaurant. I would make a reservation if you dine at Lime Restaurant as it is usually very busy.s

On your St Vincent cruise, the next major stop will be Kingstown, St Vincent's capital. There are two other anchorage's that one passes on its way to Kingstown, Buccament Bay and Petit Byahaut. Buccament Bay is well protected and calm. An afternoon swim is very enjoyable here and then we usually bring out our own cheese and crackers and make up rum punches for all. There is a pricey restaurant located here and reservations is a must. It is not open every day so please plan ahead.

Young's Island

Back upon your St Vincent Charter, you continue sailing south to Young's Island. You have Young's Island Cut and Blue Lagoon as anchorage's. Please be aware that the the passage can be tricky and one should enter from the west. The anchorage is great, but make sure you anchor both the bow and stern for a secure anchorage. One can even start their sail from here as there is an airport about 20 minutes from these anchorages. Again, if you get a taxi, you can go into town to the Supermarket, bakery etc for all provisions that you will need to replenish your stock on board.

During your St Vincent cruise at Wallilabou Anchorage, The Black Baron is a tavern run by Bruno and Lina. Here they specialize in pork BBQ, fish soup and other local dishes. It is the fanciest restaurant here and one of the priciest. We have yet to dine here, but plan on making a reservation on our next trip to St Vincent. Many our boaters have spoken highly of The Black Baron, so we want to satisfy our curiosity.

As for dining out at night while on your St Vincent charter, you have several choices. The most accommodating is Wallilabou Anchorage Restaurant, which is located right at the dock! Let Steve or Jane know that you will be having dinner in advance. The restaurant is known for its great seafood. It is very well prepared and if you like curry, you will enjoy their fish curry. Since all of their seafood is caught locally, you are guaranteed for a fresh seafood dish! If you get back from your tour early, relax before dinner and have a rum punch during happy hour!

While at Wallilabou Anchorage take advantage of the locals to give you a walking tour through the mountains or take a taxi and tour the mountain by car. Either way, there is plenty to see while being anchored at Wallilabou and while on your St Vincent cruise you should definitely make this a stop while chartering the Windward Islands. Visit the Soufriere volcano, Trinity Falls, Parrot Lookout, Darkview Falls and venture into the rainforest. Also, you can stop for lunch at a local spot along the side of the road. Wallilabou Anchorage

First of all, Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here at Wallilabou and part of its set is still up and intact for visitors to see. Steer clear of all row boats as they approach your sailing vessel. They will offer to bring you ashore and the anchorage is so easy you do not need help. It is used to attach a line to an object. Anchor hitch knots hold well even when the tension on a line is changing. Clove hitches are used to attach a line to an object. These are not the most secure knots, but work well to attach fenders to lifelines. Another common sailing knot is a figure eight. These are also known as “stopper knots” and are used at the end of a line to for jib sheets.

While on our last Windward Islands cruise, Moskito Restaurant was a new addition to Friendship Bay. When we anchored our yacht, we took the dinghy over to see Moskito Restaurant. On a previous trip, it was still under construction, so we wanted to make sure that we visited it this time around. We were just in time for their Lobster Feast and boy was it a feast! If you like lobster, this is the feast for you. Following dinner we sat back, had a few rum punches and enjoyed the view of the many yachts anchored in Admiralty Bay! Absolutely breathtaking!

Devil's Table

You will find just about every sailing yacht charter always spends one night eating at the Devil's Table. The Devil's Table is located on a dock on the water on the north side of Admiralty Bay. You are always guaranteed an excellent meal, as the food is absolutely delicious and the view incredible. We have spent the last two Christmas Eve's here and we usually get back to our yacht when the sun rises!

During your Caribbean sailing vacations, one should stop at Union Island. While it is small, Casuarina Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches with an unusual translucent turquoise waters. We have stopped at the Coco Palm bar and restaurant for a light lunch and rum punch, but prepared for the rather steep prices. One can anchor in the sand bottom, but not recommended for an overnight anchorage.

This past weekend we spent looking at hundreds of sailboats at the Annapolis Sailboat Show. I know I am ecstatic about sailing, but so are hundreds of other people. I wanted to sign up for a Catamaran and start sailing today, but for me now is not a good time. I did look at all of the vendors, walked on all of their boats, both cats and mono hulls and am planning our next trip to the Windward Islands. Caribbean sailing vacations are in fact the very best way to enjoy the vacation of your dreams. Go from Island to Island, swim , snorkel, eat at locals restaurants or cook on board. Bring a captain along with you the first time if you are uncomfortable. But if you have sailed at all, you can handle the Caribbean waters with ease.

Another stop while in Bequia during your Caribbean sailing trip, make sure to go into the Whaling Museum. Bequia has always been known for whaling. Whaling began in the 19th century and the island is known for their harpooning technique. Only 4 whales are allowed to be caught each year. Last year, the natives actually harpooned a whale, but lost it when trying to bring it in. Excitement was in the air!

TMM Charter Co

The perfect way to start your St. Vincent charter experience is to contact TMM sailing charters. We have rented our sail boats from TMM more than once and every time is just as great as the first! We usually charter a catamaran boat at least 40 feet or larger depending on how many passengers come along with us. We pick up the sailboat in the Blue Lagoon which is located on St. Vincent. Now you can stay over night at the hotel or on your boat the night before departing. We always do the later as we like to get settled, unpacked and ready for an early departure the next morning! The boat is fully equipped with everything that you need, except for food. You CAN have TMM provision your boat for you, but I choose to get up early in the morning and go to the market, while my husband checks out the boat and gets it ready for our morning departure. By the time I come back with our groceries, we are already to go! Anything that I have forgotton is not a problem as we can always stop in Bequia, Mayreau, Union or Canoaun and pick up additional groceries!

One of our favorite spots to stop is Salt Whistle Bay. The bay is absolutely breathtaking and post card perfect! Enter through the middle of the bay as there are reefs on both sides. When you arrive call Salt Whistle Bay Club, VHF: 16/68 for a wonderfully fresh dinner. The dining room is open air under thatched roofs and stone tables. Also available, is breakfast and lunch. Then sit back and enjoy the sunset as it is truly beautiful. This is just another reason to book a Caribbean Sailing vacations.

Petit Rameau and Petit Bateau

When sailing the Windward Islands, make sure that you go down to the Tobago Cays. Whether you are on a day trip with a group of tourists, you have to stop and see the Cays. Some of the best snorkeling is in the Cays. The water and reef colors range from a gold, brown, blue, turquoise and green. Set your anchor west of Petit Rameau and make sure that you anchor both bow and stern. There are strong currents in the cut between Petit Rameau and Petit Bateau.

Since it is a National Park, you must rely on your own provisioning or the local islanders will also come by with fresh fish and breads. There is also beach BBQ's. But remember, there are not any restaurants! Many local boat vendors will also sell T-shirts, ice, and jewelry. To go diving, contact Grenadines Dive, as they will come by your vessel and pick you up. So when on a Caribbean Sailboat cruise or your chartered boat, a stop in the Tobago Cays is a must!

Palm Island

A stop at Palm Island's Casuarina Beach will behold the beauty of the gorgeous turquoise water and the most beautiful beaches one could lay their eyes on! We always try to stop by The Coco Palm beach bar and restaurant, but make sure that you understand that you are here for the ambiance, as it is rather pricey. We usually anchor, go for a rum punch and then swim near the boat, relax and then head out to our next Caribbean sailing anchorage.

Mustique

To continue sailing down the Windward Islands for that unbelievable Caribbean Vacation, a stop at Mustique is a must! While Mustique is a privately owned island, anchorage is allowed in Britannia Bay. Endeavour Bay is also available, but you contact Berris Little of Mustique Moorings in advance to get permission to stop for lunch. After lunch, you can wander the little shops, take in the magnificent beaches and do a little snorkeling.

Canouan

Caribbean sailing charters are especially great for island hopping at your own speed. When you want to pick up anchor and sail to your next destination, you just do it! Another must see island is Canouan. Enter at Charlestown Bay, which is the main anchorage and marked visably by a red and green beacon. You must pass between them. Raffles Resort Casino, Restaurant, and Hotel are located in Canouan. We usually anchor in South Glossy Bay and have lunch before continuing on to the Cays. We always make sure that we stop at Canouan Beach Hotel where the water is absolutely gorgeous and while it has been, at times, pretty rolly, it is worth the delicious lunch that awaits you. The dinghy is a bit rough and so be careful approaching it.

After lunch, swim alongside of your boat for a bit of relaxing, before pulling up anchor and head to the other side of Canouan and into Charlestown Bay. Call ahead to Raffles if you plan on going there to gamble.

Friendship Bay

Friendship Bay sits on the south side of Bequia. It offers better protection than Admiralty Bay in times of strong northerly swells. The beautiful white beaches offer a secure holding. Beware that at the opposite side of the harbor is a long reef. Sail down the center. Petit Nevis is a great day anchorage. You can snorkel along the shore and wonder through the old whale rendering facilities. One should not anchor over night here and beware of the long southerly reef. This makes for a short day trip before you set off in the Caribbean Sailing to your next destination.

As you stroll along the water walking off dinner and dessert, pick up a few souvenirs. Stock up on water, fuel and provisions, before sailing.

St Lucia Dining

The fish and seafood are caught daily and served with locally grown fruits and vegetables. They have a Wednesday Night Callaloo crab feast and while you dine you listen to the local bands playing in the back ground.

Summer brings rain and that always threatening hurricane season. There will almost always be an abundance of sunshine, but be prepared for the more frequent interruption of rain showers throughout each day. The trade breezes are always around for the sailors. Inland, the sun is very hot and almost humid feeling. Pay attention to what the islanders tell you about the weather before setting for a day sail or an overnight adventure. Don't forget you can always turn on your radio and listen to the forecast!

Pack shorts, T-shirts, boat shoes and flip flops and of course, a couple of swim suits. One never has enough! Sunscreen is a must or you will burn and it will ruin your vacation. Pack aloe just in case you burn. Make sure you leave any clothing that is army camouflage, as it will get confiscated at the St. Vincent customs. No one is allowed to bring any item and I mean ANYTHING that has any camouflage color on it at all. Use soft duffle type material for your suit case as they fold and can store easily , if you are chartering a boat. Space is a comodity on most boats! Bring small bills as you will need them for tipping. The bank at St. Vincent and most other airports close at 4:00PM and usually one's flight doesn't arrive until after 5:00PM. There are other banks in St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Bequia that are open during the day. Just remember to check the times, as most close in the middle of the day for lunch. Now is the time to start planning our next visit to the Windward Islands! Do we want a smaller boat, a larger one, are we going to start in St. Lucia and sail to Grenada? Do we go for two weeks instead of 10 days? Where are we flying from? Spirit Airlines has some great fares going to San Juan, so we are going to start there and then look up Liat Airlines for the final leg of the trip. But the real question is when are we going? We are so looking forward to planning our next trip to the Windward Islands. Each and every time we go we seem to find new places to discover. Saltwhistle Bay was a fantastic discovery this last time and we plan on going back there and also to Chatham Bay on Union Island. We are all packed. Soft duffel bags line up in the kitchen waiting to be placed in the trunk of the car. Our flight leaves tomorrow morning at 5:00am and all six of us cannot contain our enthusiasm! By 5:00pm we will be boarding our 43' Catamaran unpacking our duffel's (easy to store!) The warm Caribbean air, friendly people and the best food on earth! I am already salivating at the taste of the fresh fish and veggies that we will consume for the next 10 days, while aboard our Catamaran that we booked thru TMM Charter Company. We are only three weeks from our next sailing trip and already I am getting excited. I will be packing soft duffel bags for the airlines, so that I may roll it up and place overhead for easy storage. Suitcases are too big and bulky and take up too much room. A bathing suit or two, shorts, plenty of t-shirts, hats to keep the sun off of your eyes, a cover up and a few long sleeve shirts and a jacket for the night breezes. Of course, we always bring plenty of suntan lotion. Bring a pair of boat shoes or non skid flip flops and your duffel is ready!
